The University of Sydney uses WAM as its sole academic performance metric. USyd does not calculate or issue a GPA.¹
Formula
WAM = Σ(mark × credit points) ÷ Σ(credit points)

FAQ
Common questions
Does USyd calculate a GPA?
No. The University of Sydney does not calculate or issue a GPA. WAM is the sole official academic performance metric. If another institution requests a GPA, contact them directly for their preferred conversion formula. USyd itself will not provide one.
Do failed units count towards my USyd WAM?
Yes. At USyd, all units with a numeric mark are included in WAM, including failed attempts. If you repeat a unit, both the failed attempt and the later pass are included in the calculation. This means repeat attempts can drag your WAM down even after you pass.
What happens to OLE units in my USyd WAM from Semester 1 2025?
From Semester 1 2025, Open Learning Environment (OLE) units at USyd are graded SR (Satisfied Requirements) or FR (Failed Requirements) and are excluded from WAM. OLE units completed before Semester 1 2025 that received a numeric mark are still included in WAM under the previous rules.
